FOOD AND MOODS SCRIPT

I was browsing through a bookshop today and I picked up a book on food,
which is quite usual for me cause I love food, em, but this book was a bit
different, em, it tried to make the connection between the kind of food you
eat and how it makes you feel so, for example, sometimes if I'm, if I'm a
bit sad, we’ll say, I think to myself, oh, I’d love some chocolate and that
will make me feel better, and sometimes it does, or it feels like it does anyway.
I’m not sure if that really works, but the author of this book seemed to think
that there’s a definite link between, what you, you know, what you eat and
how you feel, or how it makes you feel. She talks about things like, em, yeah,
things like chocolate and other sweet things. She says that it releases endorphins,
so that, you know endorphins are chemicals, they kind of, they make you feel good,
I think is the idea. They help you deal with stress as well as she says, so yeah, that
seems to, that seems to work, I think. One of my friends told me recently that
when she feels a bit, a bit sluggish as if she doesn’t have much energy, she’ll
go to a restaurant or go home and cook some meat cause she feels that that
gives her, gives her energy, so I was interested to read today that this author,
she mentions how sometimes the body will feel a need to, I don’t know, to be
more sharp, or to have energy and that sometimes that means that you need protein
and protein obviously would comes from meat. It seems to work for my friend
anyway, but I haven’t tried it myself anyway.

WORKING AND BRINGING UP CHILDREN

Akane: Ruth, what do you think about stay-at-home parents?

Ruth: Do you mean like one parent staying at home with a child?

Akane: Yeah, one parent staying at home and the other one working?

Ruth: Ah, I think it's really bad if a child stays at home with one parent actually.

Akane: Really, why would you say that?

Ruth: I think children who are brought up like that generally don't know how to socialize with other people except for their parents.

Akane: Oh, well, why would you think that?

Ruth: Well, they're really not given the opportunity to interact with different people, I mean, they spend pretty much all day, every day, with that one parent, and I think it's a real shame. They don't learn how to share or, you know, how to get along with and talk to different people.

Akane: Well, I think that the child will actually get more interaction if there's a stay at home parent because the parent will be able to take them to different activities and to other houses to have playmates and at the same time, they'll be able to spend more time with that parent and have socializing time with family members.

Ruth: But I think children could get those same experiences from different people who look after them. It wouldn't necessarily have to be there family who looked after them surely.

Akane: Well, sure but, I think that it's different when a person who is not related takes care of a child. I'm sure that they do their best but the love is not there. The caretaker would not love the child as much as the parent would and at the same time if there's one person taking care of ten different children at the same time I would wonder about the amount of attention that the child would get,and safety issues as well.

Ruth: But I think you've got to look at the practical aspect of this. It's not always practical for people who don't have much money to have one parent staying at home all of the time.

Akane: That's true. I really agree about that.

Ruth: Oh, good we agree on one thing.

Correct! Incorrect!

tv listening

Eucharia, Ireland

Is TV a good or bad influence? Well, most people would say it's a bad influence but my university lecturer when I was in university, quite some time ago had a very interesting take, he said that media don't influence society, that these behaviors are learned. He used the example of Japan at that time having the lowest crime rate in the world and the most violent media in the world, including video games, manga, which are the comics, and in general, Japanese TV, so yeah, there are two ways to think about it. Most people would immediately say it's a bad influence but maybe it's not.

Mark, United States

I don't think TV's a bad thing but I never ever watch it because it is extremely addictive, or I'm extremely, I can get very addicted to it. If I turn on the TV, I will watch it for two hours, but I'll just flip through the channels without actually stopping on any one thing, so I never turn on the TV.

Jeannie, United States

TV is both good and bad. It's not really the TV's fault what people are putting on it. Some of the children's programs I say are really good for kids. I used to sit my neice in front of a child's program and she picked up her ABCs pretty quickly and she sung along with the songs and everything, so I think that was pretty good but of course you have programs that are a bit too violent maybe but they're learning opportunities and you have your nonsense

Rina, Canada

Is TV a good thing or a bad thing? Well, for me I think it's wonderful because it's a form of something that entertains me without asking anything in return. For young children, I think it is a cause of a lot of desensitization but I don't think it is the sole cause of what's going on in the world in general and should be blamed for what is like the shootings and everything, and that's negative happening right now.
